Pilates is a method developed by Joseph Pilates in the 1950s. The main aim of the method is to create central dynamic stability in order to enable movement and daily functioning in an efficient way. At first, Pilates called the method “contrology” since it is necessary to maintain balance and control throughout all the movements performed. The technique draws from Eastern and Western methods and uses specially designed dedicated apparatus.

The principles of the method are – movement, breathing, concentration, control, precision, rhythm and flexibility.

In Pilates the work concentrates on the “core muscles”, which are between the pelvic floor and the diaphragm and are largely responsible for and enable our posture and muscle-control. The purpose of all this is to improve the body image and motor control in day-to-day movements, to enable increased freedom of movement and to reduce musculo-skeletal pain.
